Shay’s Entry

Dear Designer Detective,

Where do I find the mirrored piece that you have in your entry in your home? Also, what are the measurements?
-Debra Williams
Dallas

Dear Debra,

The eglomise console that I have in my entry at my home can be found at IBB Design Furniture Showroom. It’s a stunning piece by John Richard and would make quite a statement in your home. The dimensions are 36″x21″x60″. It’s one of my favorite pieces in my home.

Thanks for your question!  -Designer Detective

Out with the old & in with the blue!

Think Navy is an outdated color?   Well, think again.  Browse thru your local mall today & you will find the classic blue hue in an abundance of stores.

Background on blue:
Many color experts use these words to describe blue ~ fresh, comfort, calming, soothing, tranquility, mystery & unique.  Mineral & ice blue have been dominating color palettes for a few years now, but deeper shades of blue are re-emerging in fabrics everywhere.

These deeper shades are a great start to a color palette because they offer great contrast to colors such as yellow & white.  Navy is a classic color.  Navy is considered a dominate menswear color, so be on the lookout for prints such as plaids, pinstripes, & herringbone featuring navy.

Nail it with Nail heads!

Add some pazazz to your furniture & nail the look you want.  Sorry for the pun.  I just couldn’t resist ;-)

A technique once used out of necessity is making a huge comeback in a very sophisticated stylish way.  Nail heads can really liven up a Plain Jane sofa, chair and other accessories.   They date back to the period of 1560-1643 and the advent of French Country Style during the reign of Louis XIII.  The Os de Mouton chair marked the introduction of nail head trim

A nail head is a decorative accent that is used to embellish upholstered furniture & even some case goods.  They can accentuate the style of the piece and is usually used on arms and rails.  Nail heads are most commonly used with leather-upholstered furniture, particularly leather sofas, chairs and ottomans.

Ideas for how & when to use:

  • *can be used to add accents, decoration, or “jewelry” for your furniture
  • *when re-upholstering your own furniture to add a finished look and to hide staples or imperfections
  • *nail heads come in many designs, sizes and finishes ~ plain to ornate, polished brass or brushed nickel
  • *can be found at hardware stores and home centers
  • *nail heads must be hammered in one by one by using a tack hammer

Today on Good Morning Texas…Get resort style living in your home. Tour a fabulous Highland Homes model home in Allen in the Star Creek subdivision.  This fabulous family room features crisp ivory linen drapery panels contrasted with rich woven wood shades.  We used a rustic terracotta tile & laid it in a gorgeous Versailles pattern.  The stone fireplace and dark cedar ceiling  beams give the room a warm cozy feel.

My absolute favorite item in this room are the super cool accent chairs in the foreground of the photo.  I love the dark wood frame and light neutral fabric.  We finished the chairs with a medium sized nailhead for a stylish touch.

Some admirers may call this look British West Indies or tropical.  I call it simply fabulous.  Now, all we need is a margarita & a cabana boy !

Accessorize It!

Is something missing from your home?  You’ve bought all of the big furniture pieces, but it just doesn’t seem right.  You may take a look around & realize that you’ve forgotten to accessorize.  Accessories are like jewelry for your home.  They can help tie your whole look together.   Here’s a few ideas to pull your look together & make your home super stylish ;-)

Find a fabulous piece of art.  Use a floral and pottery to pull out the dominant colors of your color palette.

Here’s a fresh take for some coffee table decor.  I love the mixture of textures on these decorative balls.  Some are leather, some are smooth & shiny & some are adorned with seashells but they all compliment the same neutral color palette.  Combined in a bowl together, they make a beautiful statement.

Dress up a casual leather recliner with a luxurious faux mink pillow.  Va-va-va-voom!!!

Animal prints are not just for fabrics.  Try these sleek zebra decorative boxes.  They’ll most definitely liven up a bookcase.  Or, try a more practical solution & use it to hide unsightly remote controls in your family or media room.
